March 2011 - Newsletter “The GEOS Insider”

Welcome to March, the month that starts cold and wintry and finishes with the promise of spring! Because of this, people say that March “comes in like a lion and goes out like a lamb!” True to the expression, this month has started cold and everybody has stayed indoors, but GEOS Boston students have been studying hard like they always do. The highlights to these past few weeks include a guest speaker from the Harvard University, a fantastic Celtics game and a scrumptious International Food Day. We look forward to other fun events in the month ahead like the famous annual Saint Patrick’s Day parade and our weekly “Coffee Talk” sessions in which we will welcome other great guests like our Harvard student this past month.

Student Testimonial for GEOS Boston

At first, I thought it might not be a good idea to spend three months during winter in the freezing city like Boston, but it turned out to be the most enjoyable winter in my life. Warm welcome from the teachers and multi-cultural students, made me feel really comfortable and facilitated me to learn English quickly. GEOS has changed frustration into confidence.

I studied at GEOS Boston for only two weeks. But I had presious experience. Trough going to the language school, I could know about different of culture. The classmates are friendly and kind then the teachers and staff help me a lot. Thank you! The best thing is I can make friends who are from other countries. In international food day, I could eat many kinds of food. It is not Japanese food restaurant, it is WORLD FOOD restaurant. Saint Patrick’s Day Parade

The South Boston St. Patrick’s Parade is listed as the second largest parade in the country. Nearly 600,000 to one million people go to see the parade every year.
Saint Patrick’s Day is not an official holiday, but do not tell Bostonians that. It is one of the most popular days of the year in Boston. There are a lot of ways to celebrate, and businesses join in by doing things like selling green bagels, green flowers and other green items on the day. Don’t forget to wear your green on March 17th!

Daylight Saving Time

Just a reminder: set your clocks ahead one hour at 2:00 AM on March 13th, 2011. You might lose an hour of sleep, but you will be glad to get that beautiful extra hour of sunlight in the afternoon after your classes at GEOS end. It is also an encouraging time because it means that spring and summer are closer than ever!

Celtics game on February 16th
On Wednesday, February 16th, the GEOS Staff took students to the Celtics game. The Boston Celtics played the New Jersey Raptors, and they won a close game!! The GEOS students joined the native Bostonian fans in cheering on the team to add to the energy and excitement in the Boston Garden. It was an amazing game and everyone loved it. We cannot wait for the next one.

International Food Day on February 22nd
We had a potluck on Tuesday, February 22nd, 2011. GEOS staff and students had a chance to share authentic foods from various countries such as Saudi Arabia, Turkey, Thailand, Japan, Korea, and the United States. Everyone displayed their cooking talents and everyone enjoyed the awesome dishes. Many of the dishes that the students brought into the school can not even be found in any of the restaurants around Boston. It is a treat and an honor to share these delicious parts of our students’ cultures. It is not surprise that all GEOS students, staff and teachers love this activity, and eagerly await the next International Food Day!

Guest Speaker on February 23rd
Coffee Talk with a Harvard student!
On Wednesday, February 23, 2011, we had a guest speaker from Harvard University. The students were so excited to meet her. She talked about the experiences in her life that led to her acceptance into Harvard University, and all students were interested in learning about them. A popular topic of discussion was the cultural expectations in the American collegiate world, and how to prepare for a life at an American university. Students reciprocated by sharing their own life experiences that brought them to GEOS and also talking about their plans and dreams for after GEOS. It was an informative and interesting conversation all around.
