New Year’s Eve After a day of workshops, a group of GEOS students gathered in Boston to bring in the New Year together. They took advantage of the GEOS location and started the night on Boston Common where they enjoyed the ice sculptures, fireworks, and an incredible snowball fight. The GEOS students were able to enjoy all that Boston has to offer on the last night of the year. Goodbye 2009! Hello 2010! Christmas Eve This year, students at GEOS Boston celebrated the winter holidays in style. In the morning, students gathered to watch a Christmas and winter-themed movie. The sights and sounds of the movie spurred a lot of questions about the season, and the movie was followed by a mini class-discussion. After lunch, the students and staff participated in an old-fashioned “Yankee Swap.” Students and staff brought in presents to put under the GEOS tree, and the staff gave out the numbers that decided when the student would get to pick a present from the tree. The students opened the gifts one by one, and traded them for gifts they liked better. The presents ranged from bracelets to picture frames, and Garfield dolls to a copy of “Supersize Me.” Roberta Versiani got the lucky number one, and was able to pick from all the open presents at the end of the swap. Everyone went home with a merry reminder of their Christmas Eve at GEOS. The party wound down with an array of games like “Guess Who?” and “Scrabble”. Martin Luther King Day On the third Monday of January each year, the United States celebrates the life of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. King was a major player in the United States civil rights movement. He stood for nonviolent activism and protested racial discrimination, leading the Montgomery Bus Boycott in 1955 as well as the famous March on Washington in 1963. It was at this march that King delivered his famous “I Have a Dream” speech, inspiring those in attendance as well as future generations. He won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964 for his work to end racial segregation and discrimination. King was assassinated on April 4th, 1968, and this holiday was established in 1986.
